Detoxing Darlings

- Lifestyle

I love drinking detox water, especially in the warmer months.  It keeps me hydrated while I’m traveling, gives me energy throughout the day, and it’s a healthier alternative to soft drinks and other sugary beverages.  Plus, they’re always Instagram-worthy.

These are my 3 favorite detox waters, which I’ll usually switch throughout the week, and none of them require much prep.  Just drop the ingredients in your water, let it infuse overnight, and take it with you to work the next day!  The recipes all keep in the refrigerator for 2 days before things start to wilt in the water and get less… well, let’s just say less Instagram-worthy.  Opt for filtered water and organic fruits and vegetables.  Dehydration can slow down the fat burning process so water is key if you’re looking to lose weight. It lubricates joints and muscles during exercise, helps the blood supply oxygen to muscles, and helps you feel more full so you won’t overeat.  I don’t drink it to lose weight, although it would totally aid in that if that’s what you were looking for, I do it to keep my body healthy, hydrated and flush out any toxins from, say, a girls night out or a double cheeseburger with the thick-sliced, smoked applewood bacon…

Flat Tummy Water

(pictured above)

6 cups of filtered water

1 tbsp of grated ginger

1 cucumber, sliced (I usually slice them and then cut them in half so they fit through the cap of my bottle, if you have a larger-mouthed bottle, slices would work just fine)

1 lemon, sliced (same deal as the cucumbers)

1/2 cup of fresh mint leaves

Cucumbers are low in calories, act as a diuretic, high in dietary fiber, and helps keep the body alkaline. Cucumbers are a perfect weight loss food.  Ginger kicks your metabolism into high-gear and it helps you feel more full which means less chance of overeating.  Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps suppress food cravings. They’re a great cleaning agent which counts for your body too.  It cleanses and detoxifies it, and they are alkaline forming which will aid with weight loss.  Mint is an appetite suppressant, surprise!  Plus it makes the water taste really refreshing.

Stress Relieving Detox Water

5 strawberries

1/2 cup of chunked pineapple

2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar

4-5 fresh basil leaves

16 cups of filtered water

Pineapple is delicious.  That’s number one.  To add onto that, it has a natural anti-oxidant that helps to improve your body’s immune system and help alleviate high blood pressure.  Strawberries are a nutrient-rich fruit.  They’re full of Vitamins A, C, E, K, iron, and folic acid.  Apple cider vinegar is not as delicious as the pineapple but it’s so good for you.  It helps with weight loss, acne, healthy hair, and so much more.  Basil is a powerhouse and it’s filled with anti-bacterial agents and antioxidants which helps to protect your liver by removing toxins.

Refreshing Boost Detox Water

1½ cups watermelon

1½ cups cantaloupe

1½ cups honeydew melon (the riper it is the more flavor)

16 cups filtered water

I use a melon baller because it’s quick and easy and looks prettier than cubing the fruit.  This is the perfect summer drink and it presents well.  Watermelon helps the body flush out toxins by helping the liver and kidneys filter.  It’s like a boost for your liver.  Cantaloupe is one of the healthiest fruits you can pick.  It’s full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients with high levels of Vitamin C, A, and B6, plus Potassium, Niacin, dietary fiber, and folic acid.  Honeydew has a high water content and potassium levels so it’s great at helping you maintain healthy blood pressure levels.  It also has both vitamin C and copper, which promotes healthy skin by boosting collagen production and tissue repair.

Summer is the perfect time to drink detox water.  It keeps you hydrated in the heat and helps flatten your tummy for bikini season.  Whatever your reason for detoxing, be it to lose weight, flush out toxins from a night out, or just keep your body healthy, these detox water recipes are the perfect start.

DRINK UP, Darlings.
