Memorial Day weekend is one of my favorite holidays because it marks the official beginning of S U M M E R! From pool openings to the start of rooftop season, it’s the perfect time to be outside. For Memorial Day weekend, Nicole and I decided to be tourists in our own city, Washington D.C.
Today’s lifestyle post is dedicated to our top 4 must-see tourist spots in the District. Getting around D.C. can be hectic almost everyday of the week, but we went with taking the subway into the National Mall to start our adventure. Ditching the car and going with public transportation leaves you with the ease of not worrying about parking or the crazy city traffic. We stopped for brunch at our favorite rooftop restaurant (post on our top rooftop spots coming soon!) that overlooked the Washington Monument and The White House and made for a breathtaking sneak peek of what we had in store that day.
Our first stop was right around the corner, The White House.
An important thing to remember when visiting such a high profile site, is that you always have the possibility of facing some restrictions. We hit one of these restrictions when police blocked off access to the front of The White House and we could only visit the back lawn. Honestly, it’s equally stunning.
The best part of touristing around The National Mall, is proximity. All we had to do was cross the street and walk across the grass lawn and we were standing in front of the Washington Monument.
Our next stop, was the World War II Memorial where you can snag a great shot in front of your home state with the fountain in the back. This was a couple blocks away from the Washington Monument, so remembering comfortable footwear is a MUST! Aim for a pair of flats/sandals or even sneakers rather than wedges or heels for all the walking you’ll have in store. I went with a Bebe black bodysuit, khaki linen shorts, Marc Jacobs sunnies and Forever 21 sandals. Nicole wore an ASOS jumpsuit, Cole Haan sunnies, H&M wide brim hat and a vintage cross body saddle-bag.
We walked along the Reflecting Pool to get to our last site of the day, where we climbed up the historic steps (which was a workout in itself) of the Lincoln Memorial. Besides a quick metro card and brunch, this was a free outing on a beautiful day and a great way to see the city you see everyday, but in a new way.
