Beignet Binges

- Lifestyle

Scene: I’m getting ready for work and one of the (many) Kardashian rerun marathons is playing in the background on E! and Kim is saying she’s flying to New Orleans to satisfy her pregnancy cravings.  Enter, the beignet.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I suffer from food envy, especially when it comes to desserts.  I have total respect for people that can watch tv and see someone eating a cupcake and not immediately want a fluffy lemon cupcake with cream cheese frosting… I’m just not one of them.

(I’d like to take a moment to thank my parents for my high metabolism.)

So I take to the internet and find Bayou Bakery.  This gem had rave reviews about their New Orleans style cuisine and a litany of comments as having the best beignets in DC and after Chelsea and I had a chance to check it out, I can say it lived up to its reputation!

I could talk about all of their incredible Louisiana-style dishes that have received national praise, like their Gumbo or their Shrimp Creole, or their specialty drink menu with favorites like the NOLA Swinger (grapefruit, honey, rosemary, jalapeno and bourbon), but seriously, look at this picture:

Beignets (pronounced “ben-yays”) are New Orleans version of the doughnut.  This light and pillowy pastry is served warm with a heap of powdered sugar on top.  Bayou Bakery serves 3 in an order and it’s perfectly paired with a latte or cafe au lait.  Cafe au lait in popular New Orleans cafes is made with milk and coffee mixed with chicory so it has a strong, bitter taste to offset the sweet powdered beignets.  In NOLA, they scald the milk, rather than steam it, and mix it with espresso or dark coffee.  It’s the perfect pair to your fluffy beignet.  I liked mine with cafe au lait and Balmain sunglasses on the side.

And both locations are adorable!  Exposed brick inside, nostalgic New Orleans decor, rustic tables with deep sofas, and chalkboards with drink specials.  If it’s a nice day, take your beignets outside to their patios and people-watch in Capitol Hill in DC or the Courthouse neighborhood in Arlington.

So thank you, Kim Kardashian-West, for sharing your deep-fried cravings with us and making me, a beignet believer.

EAT UP darlings!
